i-Travel releases new deliverable on setting up of supplier community

The i-Travel concept relies on the provision of an e-Marketplace that enables travel service providers to exchange data between one another about a users travel booking and requests.

This deliverable presents the results of Work Package 5, which defines the conditions and operating environment for the supplier community and defines the proposed structure that such a community would operate under. The work package has investigated several models for cooperation and also analysed similar organisations to suggest the administrational structure for the i-travel concept.

The document also investigates the current environment of Electronic Marketplaces and investigates the business models, set up and scope of such entities operating today.

i-Travel was invented from the observation that the current market of on-line travel services is fragmented, most of the services only cover the pre-trip planning phase and many of the services can not exchange information among each other.

The vision was to allow the provision of end-to-end travel services covering the complete range of pre-trip planning, on-trip assistance and post-trip evaluation services. This should include any type of transportation means providing information and services with different geographical coverage ranging from international air or rail transportation to local road or public transport services and independently or the users linguistic ability. In addition the vision has to acknowledge the already existing services more or less vertically integrated with different geographic coverage and commercial policies. Therefore, the idea was to build on such existing services and develop a set of rules, standards and best practises allowing each service or information provider to “expose” their service on the e-Marketplace where they can be “consumed” by software travel agents. i-Travel does not intend to build a centralised platform or database where all information or services will reside. This was considered not feasible both from a technical and commercial point of view and against with the interest of existing service and information providers.

The i-travel project believes that the concept can best be served by the developed of an e-Marketplace of companies operating together in a B2B environment, download the deliverable here.
